South Africa and Lesotho
After visiting South Africa and Lesotho in 2011 and then again in Oct/ Nov 2013 the following are a selection of paintings developed after sketches and studies in the Maluti Mountain range between the Eastern Free State and Lesotho and up to the Drakensberg Mountains of Kwa Zulu Natal. It is a particularly beautiful, mountainous area inhabited predominantly by the Basotho people. Although landlocked within South Africa, Lesotho has always maintained independence and so does not have the post apartheid development of its neighbours. Very poor and living mainly off subsistence farming with very high rates of HIV, the people are nevertheless friendly and hard-working. It is a wonderful place.

Situated between the town of Clarens in the Eastern Free State and Lesotho at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains is the highlands area where wildebeest and zebra roam free in the valleys between huge golden hued sandstone sentinels.
